Facebook, Google – Salient Privacy Settings

This is off-topic w.r.t the blog ;) , you might feel bored :P

We keep howling and shouting about privacy on social networks especially on Facebook. Here’s a little of both Facebook & Google which I have managed to find recently (Limit audience for old posts and making Gmail chat status private). I don’t know if its a big deal or no, talking/saving our privacy but it also doesn’t make sense going on publicizing to everyone what you are doing, where you are going etc ! ?

Facebook – Limit the audience for old posts on your profile:

This started with Facebook when some of my earlier posts had been public posts, so I wanted to put it back to my normal settings of only to “my friends”. And then this new privacy setting appears magically on facebook privacy setting tab “Limit the Audience for Past Posts” and my problem was solved. And also put all your posts only to “Friends” unless you want to be known to the world through your posts on facebook ;) .

Below are some screenshots to help you find it. Goto Facebook -> Login -> Privacy Settings and then follow the screenshots below.

Disable Google Buzz & View and edit applications with authorized access:

Now onto Google privacy settings. Was really surprised to know that our Gmail/Gtalk status messages are Public, this was observed through Google Buzz (even after disabling google buzz from Gmail inbox). So here are few settings first to get rid of Google Buzz profile or account.
Goto Gmail -> Login -> Mail Settings -> Disable Google Buzz and delete the buzz account itself.
You could have given access to some third party and forgotten (like I had done), if you have auhorized third party applications to access your buzz data, you can get rid of those in the “Your external apps:” settings just above the Disable Google Buzz link. I am not sure if gmail status will still be public even after deleting the google buzz account, so below is the setting again !

Make Gmail Status Private:
Goto Google Dashboard, if you didn’t know its fine, goto www.google.com/dashboard and login with your google account info. Scroll below to find Buzz. Click on Connected sites and make your gmail status private. And remove any other site or change their “Sharing setting”. Check below for screenshots.

And this one is old but do check “About me” on the web setting, its the first on Google dashboard.

If you weren’t aware of Google dashboard just scroll below to be surprised ! (its pretty old, it was launched some time in 2009)

Hope these settings were helpful ! Enjoy “private” social networking !
