Hyderabad International Airport – Many Wows and one disappointment
Yes, I am talking about the GMR Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad International Airport at Shamshabad. It was my first visit to hyderabad international airport. You will be really impressed by the massive majestic planned airport architecture. Even though its too far from the city (around 30km), its fine. The airport is nicely designed and its just too huuuge. Everything looks clean and tidy and the people are very helpful and considerate.
You will feel happy to find such an airport in India. Really impressive ! There are few other things which I didn’t like much – such as the prices of food at the airport – very high, expensive. But still its fine as its an international airport and things are normally expensive.
But there is one thing which really disappointed me. The Hyderabadi Biryani at the airport. The chicken
biryani was around Rs 300 +. The price is not the issue here, the quality, the essence of authentic hyderabadi biryani was missing. I even asked the caterer whether they make the authentic biryani and reply was obviously yes, how dumb of me ! It was the most pathetic, terrible chicken biryani ever had. (I could make better, but that’s not the point). Hyderabad is known for the famous delicious hyderabadi biryani. International travellers as well as local travellers will always wish that they could have it for lunch or dinner when they visit hyderabad for sure. But I didn’t have the time to visit the city and taste the authentic biryani at some local famous restraurants like Hotel Shadab. So I thought of trying it out at the airport and that turned out to be a wrong decision and was totally disappointed.
When a dish is so famous and it attaches to the city name like an identity for the city, the least the airport guys could do is hire some good cooks who make authentic biryani and not just provide some rice with no masala and very badly prepared chicken. They are spoiling the very identity of ‘hyderabadi biryani’. When a local tourist was not impressed, how can you expect an outsider to be impressed by such pathetic biryani sold in the name of “hyderabadi chicken biryani”.
